BLIVEN WIDOW RUMORED MUDERED IN RED BRANCH
Timber Review - November 25, 1879 (Red Branch, MI)
Two days ago the 23rd just before sundown nine men discovered the remains of a beloved member of Red Branch and thereby confirmed in a measure the reputation which this county has acquired through a series of unexplained murders in the past years.
The community was shocked and saddened by the sudden loss of Mrs. Hester Bliven, of Detroit, widowed to one Edward C. Bliven, of Canada. Of this discovery, Miss Edna Kalavoix, who like to wait on the sick, said she had seen the deceased just that morning in the house where she boarded.
The nine brave members of the community released the fallen woman from the ice with unhappy countenances, where it is believed she was drowned by unknown person or persons. The mystery is furthered horrifying by the revelation that deceased was defaced.
Mrs. Hester Bliven, with two-floor boarding house intact and 50 acres, leaves no living relations.
An inquest was held at Ada yester and the jury's verdict was that Mrs. Bliven came to her death in unknown manner or "accidentally".
